When Fred was here he would be working in the yard and if he saw somebody peering through the railings (this happened all the time) he would stop work and say "Ayup Cock, come in" he would then give them the grand tour of the yard! Sometimes he would be doing this all day and not get any work done, but he never minded this as he was so proud to show people round explaining what he had done here.
CONTACT US FOR
A VISIT TO THE HOUSE
We are proud to show Fred Dibnah's House and Works for all to see. Please find contact details listed below so you know what is available and at what times.
After we have been in the house for a cuppa we go into the main workshop/engine room where Fred kept his beloved "Betsy" the steam roller and his equally famous traction engine. Plenty of seating is provided and once you are settled into your seat we will regale you with lots of stories about Fred and how we fought tooth and nail to set up the Heritage Centre after saving it from being flattened for redevelopment.
There are hundreds of amazing artefacts and the amazing collection of victorian machinery that Fred worked with, all in fully working condition, and all powered by steam. There is a collection of his famous jumpers as seen on TV, his ladders are there, after all these wonderful entertaining stories you are free to have a browse of our retail outlet where we have a great selection of memorabilia including a collection of DVD's that are exclusive to us.
Guided tours are every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturdays at 2pm.
For individual bookings we are open for guided tours every Wednesday Thursday and Saturday at 2pm.
For group bookings of ten or more we will open any day morning or afternoon when booked in advance.
DIRECTIONS TO THE YARD CAN BE FOUND HERE.

We are trying to keep up this tradition of showing visitors around explaining all about Fred's work here and where everything came from, just in the same way as Fred did. A tour typically takes two to two and a half hours, with an entertaining tour of the yard with all the stories about the mineshaft, the 50ft chimney, the top of Swan Mill chimney in the garden, the boiler house and we also show the spot where that famous arrow scene was shot in the TV series. Then we go into the house for a cuppa and show Fred's beautiful kitchen, exactly as he fitted it out, visitors get to see the snug and the living room, with all the amazing fittings and beams that Fred fitted, in winter the coal fires are always lit and many people comment " ooh I could stay here all day, its so cozy".
